Making your Numbers Count - Effective Library Statistics

Make your numbers work for you! Learn how to tell your library’s story as powerfully as possible when requesting funds, staff, or other resources. Participants will learn about many options and tools for gathering and analyzing quantitative data about their libraries and programs of service. The workshop will also provide an opportunity to share experiences and frustrations related to weeding out irrelevant information. In this session participants will:

  • determine what you need to know and why
  • identify your specific audience
  • identify four reasons for collecting data
  • establish techniques to use for each type of data
  • evaluate the quality of the data
  • decide what to do with those numbers
  • discuss effective ways of organizing and presenting the data

*Participants should bring some recent statistics collected from their library to use during this session.

For those who wish to begin graphing and charting their data, Integrating the Power of Charts is an excellent companion course to this topic.
