Critical Thinking for Online Research

The Internet can be an exciting and wondrous place for students to find information and encourage creative learning. It can also be a distraction, and even a danger, to those not aware of the pitfalls. This session will provide you with a variety of suggestions for Internet-proofing your students so you can be assured that they can apply critical thinking and safety skills as they journey online. During this session, you will learn to prepare your students to safely navigate the web. Participants in this workshop will:

  • examine strategies for teaching students to use the Net safely and effectively
  • practice methods of verifying Web content
  • complete checklists for evaluating Web sites
  • discuss the pitfalls in email and chat and how to manage them
  • consider the effectiveness of "automated" safety mechanisms

This is a facilitated working session where participants will be guided through discussion, discovery, and assessment while looking at risk factors and solutions. The Media Awareness Network is one of the online resources used during this workshop.
