Integrating Student Email in the Alberta Curriculum

Media attention has denounced the use of email in classrooms as a non-educational time waster. You can develop some classroom tested approaches to dispel these beliefs, and in the process help your students become email savvy and responsible users of the technology, building their skill levels beyond key pals and social use. Beginning with the Foundational Operations, Knowledge and Concepts stage, this workshop will assist teachers in identifying activities for the Processes for Productivity stage and move toward the Inquiring, Decision-Making and Problem-solving stage as outlined in the Learner Outcomes in Information and Communication Technology (ECS- 12) document from Alberta Education. In this session, you will:

  • develop a strong understanding of WHY email is a useful educational tool
  • examine real life applications within the curriculum - both classroom tested and potential
  • build lessons that will introduce your students to netiquette
  • learn ways to help your students become advanced, independent and responsible users
  • discuss peer mentoring programs for students that will assist in email integration within your school
  • consider ideas for parent inservices led by students
