An Introduction to XHTML & CSS

In the spring of 2000, the World Wide Web Consortium recommended the move from HTML 4.01 to XHTML 1.0 as part of the transition towards XML as the standard for the Web. XHTML integrates much of the common HTML designers are used to, but also brings in some of the strict coding practices of XML. Extensive use of Cascading Style Sheets is now recommended over HTML formatting in an effort to accomodate the various devices now in use for viewing information from the Web. This session is designed to help those already familiar with HTML to make a quick transition to using XHTML and CSS. In this hands-on workshop participants will:

  • examine reasons for the transition from HTML
  • learn differences between HTML and XHTML that will change your coding practices
  • consider options and tools for conversion of existing HTML documents
  • learn the basics of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)
  • build basic style sheets for your Web pages

Participants in this session are expected to have some experience with HTML coding before taking this course.
