Karen Kiefer

Karen graduated with a B.Ed. degree in Secondary Education from the University of Calgary. She completed a double major in Pure Math and Languages and worked in and around the Oil & Gas industry of Calgary for 15 years. During this time she completed a Management Certification in Personnel Management and Human Resources from the University of Calgary and her 4th Level C.M.A. She is currently completing a Master’s in Distance Education from Athabasca University.

Choosing to move into a more technology focused career, Karen moved into advertising and worked with a number of agencies in the city of Calgary. She worked as a Production Manager, Financial Manager, Operations Manager and Producer with print production, video & sound productions, television productions and interactive media productions for corporate entities. In 1998, Karen chose to join the teaching force and began teaching Design & Communications Studies for the Calgary Board of Education. She truly enjoys teaching graphic design, digital photography, photo-manipulation, page design & layout, web design and animation programs, enticing students to explore and create beyond their dreams and challenging them to try something new.

Karen works extensively with students to digitally prepare the yearbook for the high school she teaches in, training and teaching students to use digital cameras, complete photo manipulations, page layouts & designs and print production. The last 2 years, the yearbook has been recognized Nationally and has placed 2nd in Canada. Karen has taught workshops for fellow colleagues and worked with CBE-Learn as an online teacher in the Career & Technology Studies (CTS) courses. As well, she has worked extensively in the Career Pathways Work Experience Summer Program for Logistics and Health.

In her spare time, Karen likes to work on her ballroom dancing and walk her dog, Chimo.
